RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019 Competition Entry by Gill McGregor
It was a last minute decision to enter the Chelsea Flower Show Competition – with the Title ‘avant garde’ it meant the design had to be ‘new with experimental ideas and methods’. It took about 4 weeks to design and then just 2 weeks before the competition date an  email arrived from the RHS – ‘Exhibitors should not use Floral Foam’ – followed swiftly by – ‘If you do use floral foam please use the Enhanced Biodegradable’ – followed by – ‘Competitors will not lose marks if they use floral foam’. As the title of the design was ‘avant garde’ Gill knew her original design using floral foam no longer fitted the title.  Gill started a complete redesign of her entry; no longer using floral foam. Living materials replaced the floral foam, knotted aspidistra leaves and plaited palms became the new mechanics - ready for the competition and all done in less than 2 weeks.
To compete at the Chelsea Flower show meant starting on the Sunday evening at 9pm and then working through the night. While it can be said that there was definitely a competitive spirit amongst the competitors it can also be said that with all the work done by the organisers – on hand throughout all the competitions - there was also the feeling Camaraderie with all competitors working toward a common goal; a big thank you to everyone involved.
Gill’s design won a Chelsea Flower Show Silver Medal.
